Spare Safety

Here at Spare Leash safety is our number one priority. To keep both our sitters and pets safe we have set safety plans set in place. Please read the following safety instructions carefully. With any booking, both the Pet Owner and Spare Sitter agree to follow the safety guidelines below.

PET OWNER and SITTER:

Both pet owners and sitters understand that Spare Leash is only a platform to connect a pet sitter to a pet owner. Spare Leash cannot be held liable for anything after the meet and greet have taken place and therefore the sitter is responsible for handling any emergency situations while pet sitting.

SPARE SITTER:

The sitter is required to familiarize and gather all necessary information regarding the pet during the meet and greet. They also need to confirm if they feel comfortable with the pet and the pet sitting service.

During the meet and greet with the client, it is the sitter’s responsibility to check the client’s dog’s harness, collar, leash to be functional and the dog’s ID tag to be up to date. During this meet and greet, the sitter will see if they’re comfortable with walking the dog and with the existing equipment. If there are any issues, please inform the pet owner and Spare Leash.

It is the sitter's responsibility to ask all appropriate questions, regarding feeding, veterinary information, walking times, litter box cleaning and day to day instructions that will help satisfy the animals sitting as much as possible.

PET OWNER:

The Pet Owner must prepare the dog and cat before the sitting takes place to make sure it has all necessary items to make the sitting as safe as possible. ( Please reference our Spare Checklist here to make sure all items are accounted for)

We would recommend that all dogs are registered before using the Spare Leash services but if in a case where the dog is not registered all dogs must come with an I.D. tag attached to a collar. The I.D. tag must have the telephone number.

EMERGENCIES:

In case of an emergency please see below the measures that need to be taken in an emergency situation:

Emergency plan: LOST DOG

All of the Spare Leash sitters have animal experience but even with extensive experience accidents do happen and can happen to anyone. If an emergency were to happen in our sitter's care we have created a plan on how best to get the dog safely back home.

  • If a dog happens to get loose or escape from the leash and collar, STAY CALM. Drop/lay to the floor and calmly call the dog back to you. Do NOT chase the dog.

  • Take note of the time, your location, what the dog is wearing and call or message Spare Sitter support immediately and contact the owner.

  • Spare Leash will make a lost dog flyer with all information and contact other sitters to come help and search for the dog.

  • Print the flyer and put inside compound of where dog lives.

  • Regularly check back at dogs home and your home in case the dog found its way back.

  • Go to the closest police station to check CCTV footage.

  • Ask people that are frequent in this area, if they have seen the dog (security guards, street cleaners, shop owners, police officers).

  • Carry collar, leash and treats with you incase you spot the dog.

  • Send regular updates to the owner and Spare Leash so we can make sure all of our resources are being used wisely and appropriately.

Emergency plan: LOST CAT

  • If a cat happens to get loose or escape from the home, STAY CALM. Drop/lay to the floor and calmly call the cat back to you. Do NOT chase the cat.

  • Take note of the time, your location, what the cat is wearing and call or message Spare Sitter support immediately and contact the owner.

  • Spare Leash will make a lost cat flyer with all information and contact other sitters to come help and search for the cat.

  • Print the flyer and put inside compound of where cat lives.

  • Put the cats litterbox and food outside the home.

  • Regularly check back at cats home and your home in case the cat found its way back.

  • Go to the closest police station to check CCTV footage.

  • Ask people that are frequent in this area, if they have seen the cat (security guards, street cleaners, shop owners, police officers).

  • Carry treats with you incase you spot the cat.

  • Send regular updates to the owner and Spare Leash so we can make sure all of our resources are being used wisely and appropriately.

Emergency plan: MEDICAL EMERGENCY

  • immediately take the pet to the vet (if owners vet is too far, take the pet to the nearest vet);

  • contact the owner and send regular updates tell vet all necessary information regarding the condition;

  • medical emergencies could be: eating poison, allergic reaction, attack from another animal, car accident, if you notice any unusual behavior, etc.;

  • in case of the very critical condition also contact Spare Leash;

  • get owners approval if any major decision has to be made;

  • in case of near death during vet visit: call the owner, let vet explain next steps to the owner, contact Spare Leash.
